Ray Wetzel, Curator at the Gadsden Museum of Art

Ray Wetzel was an independent studio artist for over ten years until he attended Jacksonville State University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. Upon completing the program, Ray was hired as the Gallery Coordinator for the university which led him to a career in the museum field. Ray spent several years volunteering and training at several institutions in the Southeast until he received a job at the Gadsden Museum of Art as Curator, and is currently serving as Director/Curator. As an artist, Ray has had nine solo shows, participated in over forty group shows, and has had his work displayed in one national show.

"When I was twenty-eight, someone told me I could never paint an experience exactly how I remembered it. After struggling with that thought, I decided to do exactly that by not necessarily painting my life in a narrative, but by taking a simple experience from my life and trying to recreate the feeling. Not trying to copy the exact image, I use my paintings to create an installation to get the viewer to feel the same feeling I had at the exact moment."
